T E T I N E - VOODOO DANCE & OTHER STORIES
Slum Dunk Music presents the new album by tropical mutant punk funk duo Tetine â?" comprised of Brazilian-born artists/musicians Bruno Verner & Eliete Mejorado. The pair met in Brazil while taking part in the local underground art punk scene of the early 90â??s in São Paulo.
Voodoo Dance & Other Stories is Tetineâ??s fourth release in Europe - in fact their 11th album since they formed in São Paulo. The album is a follow up to last yearâ??s From A Forest Near You & Let Your Xâ??s Be Yâ??s released on Soul Jazz Records in 2008.
The new release brings a dark & luminous collection of melancholic electronic pop featuring 10 brand new tracks written between 2009 & 2010.
The songs here are heavy on percussive rhythmic elements with playful synths & bass lines, unconventional vocal counter chants & simple melodies - forming an unusual set of reflective & atmospheric numbers that marry Tetineâ??s mutant tropical sound with ghetto electro funks, nostalgic love songs and some dark soundscapes.
REVIEWS
â??About 25 years ago, Arnold Schwarzenegger told Playboy Channel viewers that the â??assâ? is the best thing about Brazilian women and their nationâ??s culture. Such stereotypes of Brazil are exactly what São Paulo-bred â??tropical mutant punk funkâ? group Tetine explores, critiques, exploits, and ironically salutes.â? XLR8R
â??As a piece it holds together with wit and charm. Kinder than their full-on live shows it pulls you in and holds you with its ever changing flow and colour, never boring, always inventive.â? Nick Tesco, Music Week
"What makes Tetine so good is that their off-beat, messy quality makes them natural, seemingly effortless, and therefore beautiful.â? URB magazine
â??Brazilian boy-girl duo Tetine veers from compelling tropicalia- flanged, punk-funk to dark, minimal, cosmic discoâ?¦ sounds like something a DJ could spin down the Dalek disco.â? TIME OUT LONDON
â??The new Tetine album is a joy. It oozes charm and atmosphere with a delicious punk-funk-disco sound from Brazilian duo Bruno Verner and Eliete Mejorado A tropical meld of genres. You can hear the exotic parts of Sao Paulo, New York and London soundtracked within these songs. It will make you want to dance yet it doesn't pander to the usual dance production formulas.â? DJ Mark Moore
â??Ingested with their history in mind Tetine soundtracks an artistic project that wears its authenticity, confidence and continuing need for experimentation proudly on its sleeve. Less â??we do not give a fuckâ??, more â??we do not need to give a fuckâ?? - a crucial difference in a music market riddled with attitude, desperately seeking substance.â? Fat Planet
â??Brazilian duo Tetine, that's Bruno and Eli are like a little paradise of music making, this forthcoming album features the relaxed side of their DIY approach.â? PIX Magazine
