The Hangman Tree' perfectly showcases the musical tour de force that is Laura J Martin, whose spell-binding vocals gently harmonise to the sound of mandolins and harmonica before launching into a delightful and uplifting jamboree of xylophone, beats, handclaps, kazoos and flute. As with all of Laura's tracks, 'The Hangman Tree' was self-produced by her own fair hands, with the majority of instruments played by her also. Her voice is typically soft and willowy and reminiscent of classic UK folk voices such as Jackie McShee (Pentangle), Judy Dibble (Fairport Convention) and Vashti Bunyan. The B-side is a cover of Chaka Demus & Pliers reggae classic 'Tease Me' - a live favourite and a real treat for fans who look forward to Laura's sensuous yet playful version at her gigs.
Laura's entrancing live performances have already earned her a legion of devoted followers; amongst them ROB DA BANK who immediately offered booked her for this years BESTIVAL and CAMP BESTIVAL, as well as a session performing on his hugely influential RADIO 1 Show. Previous appearances as festivals such as THE BIG CHILL, GREENMAN, LATITUDE and SOUNDWAVE CROATIA and a support slot on ALICE RUSSELL's recent UK tour have had crowds at a standstill, marvelling at how such an amount of beautiful sound could be coming from one lady! Whatever Laura turns her hand to, she gets a rush of critical praise; her debut single DokiDoki was championed by Tom Robinson (BBC Radio 6) and both Vodaphone and Tang (one of Brazil's most popular drinks) have licensed it to promote their products. More recently, acclaimed Twisted Nerve label (Andy Votel/Finders Keepers) have asked her to appear on their forthcoming Bearded Ladies compilation.
